Interceding For Others

One of the things I asked God to help me with is to be able to pray for others. As Christians, isn’t that what we’re supposed to be doing? Praying for others, or interceding, means to plead or speak on behalf of someone. To stand in the gap for them. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to pray for others; I just didn’t have confidence. Well, I bet you can guess what happened after that prayer request? Yep, people began asking me to pray for them, or I found myself in situations where I knew someone needed prayer. When I worried that my prayers wouldn’t be good enough, God reminded me that:
He helps us pray for others
Romans 8:26-27 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.
His words are powerful and will not fail
Isaiah 55:11 It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.
He gives us examples of how others did it in the bible
When the devil tried to tempt Jesus in the wilderness in Matthew 4:1-11, his four responses to the devil all started with, “the scriptures say”.
It is our responsibility to pray for one another
1 Timothy 2:1 says, “I urge you, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving be made for all people.”
Author Rich Bitterman (2024) wrote that “intercessory prayer is an act of love, obedience, and partnership with God.” Reading this changed everything for me. Interceding isn’t about having all the right words—it’s about showing love by lifting someone before the Father; obeying God’s call to pray for others; and partnering with Him to accomplish what only He can do.
As I’ve stepped out in faith, I’m learning that God isn’t looking for perfect prayers—He’s looking for willing hearts. When we show up, He supplies the words, the strength, and the power. All we have to do is stand in the gap and trust that God will do the rest.
